Local martial arts academy teaches the power of words, character

Powerful Words Character Development program, developed by renowned Dr. Silverman, teaches kids at Family Karate of Rancho Penasquitos to be their best and build character

Family Karate of Penasquitos (PQ) is repositioning itself as a Personal Development Center with the launch of the industry’s leading character development program, Powerful Words Character Development. Starting February 1, this comprehensive character development program will be incorporated with Family Karate PQ’s fun and exciting Martial Arts curriculum for children ages 4-14.

The program forms the backbone from which all of Family Karate PQ students can study, grow, develop, learn and become an upstanding member of the community and a confident individual. “This full education process provides purpose to what we do as teachers—it gives students something for which to strive, the strength to explore, and a foundation on which to succeed. We feel that by providing several facets to learning, both physical and mental, we can ultimately help students to grow in a variety of positive ways,” says Dr. Robyn J.A. Silverman, creator of the Powerful Words Character Development System. Dr. Robyn Silverman, child/teen development specialist and award-winning writer, graduated with her PhD from Tufts University’s prestigious applied child/teen development program. She is known for her no-nonsense yet positive approach to helping young people and their families thrive.

The Powerful Words Character Development program consists of projects and lessons such as “Powerful Word of the Month”, “Powerful Projects”, and “Monthly Challenges”, within the context of Family Karate PQ’s fun and organized Martial Arts curriculum. February’s “powerful word” is loyalty. “Powerful words” for subsequent months include courage, self reliance, acceptance and health. The word will be the same for all participants but lessons will be specifically tailored by age groups (4-6 yrs, 7-12 yrs, and teens). Students are invited to listen, share, discover, and reflect—and of course, bring the lessons home to their family.

Family Karate encourages the entire family to be engaged in this program. Parents will receive newsletters and videos to support their children’s learning and character development.

Students and their families can use this positive approach to set, evaluate, prioritize, and achieve goals—building strength, respect, responsibility, and hope along the way. They learn the power of choice, the thrill of accomplishment, as well as the consequences and rewards of certain behaviors. “Ultimately, our aim is to help our students embrace the person that they are, respect those around them, and share their appreciation at home, in school, and within their community while having a terrific time learning at our facility.” said Andrew Thomson, Head Instructor at Family Karate PQ.
