Mt. Carmel Student Wins Grand Prize

Amy Cheu, a June 2010 graduate of Mt. Carmel High, was the grand prize winner in the 2011 national Endangered Species Day Youth Art Contest.

Organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Endangered Species Coalition, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/ University of New Orleans, the art contest was an integral part of the 6^th annual national Endangered Species Day in May, and an opportunity for young people to learn about and promote the conservation of endangered species through art.

Cheu was honored for her depiction of a green sea turtle on the sand. As the grand prize winner, she will have her name engraved on a special trophy designed by gifted young artist Meredith Graf of New Orleans. In addition, she received a round-trip flight to Washington, D.C., to attend a special reception in May, and a gift certificate for art supplies.

The competition attracted more than 2,500 entries in four categories.
